This Hoosier Ain't Voting for Bayh.

Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a proud Hoosier.
I chose to move here from Florida as an adult, but I had lived here until the age of 12. I love the stunning countryside, the small creeks, the gorgeous cornfields in summer and the tiny lakes nestled in copses of trees. And the Hoosier people.
We get picked on, but after '06 maybe ya'll will give us the benefit of the doubt.

Well, don't extend that benefit to Senator Bayh. Do your homework.
I've included a few places to start. Makes for interesting reading.

It's often more important to look at what they actually do. A case in point may be Indiana Senator Evan Bayh, who has already signaled his intention to run for the presidency in 2008.

(snip) One gauge of Bayh's conviction and character might be what he did on March 13, 2001. That day, the Senate was debating so-called "Bankruptcy Reform," a bill promoted by the credit card companies that made it much harder for consumers to escape debt by declaring bankruptcy. Congress had passed a version of the bill in 2000, but Bill Clinton had vetoed it. Now, with George W. Bush backing the bill and Republicans in control of both houses, it was heading toward a vote. Some Senate Democrats tried to introduce amendments that would benefit consumers. Diane Feinstein of California and Chris Dodd of Connecticut proposed amendments that would protect minors--Feinstein offered a very mild amendment to the bankruptcy bill. (snip) Dodd's amendment was somewhat tougher. (snip) Both amendments lost--Feinstein's by 55 to 42 and Dodd's by 58 to 41. The great majority of Democrats voted for these amendments, but not Bayh. He joined the credit card companies and the Republicans in opposing both.

Why did he do it? Bayh didn't say during the debate, and he didn't issue a statement afterwards. The fact is that they were minor votes and probably ones that Bayh expected the greater public (but not the credit companies) to ignore.

Before that, Susan Bayh was a director of Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc., from 2000 to 2004, and Esperion Therapeutics Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, from 2000 to 2003. From 1994 to 2004, she was a distinguished visiting professor at the College of Business Administration at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. From 1994 to 2000, she was a commissioner for the International Joint Commission of the Water Treaty Act between the United States and Canada. From 1989 to 1994, Susan Bayh was an attorney in the pharmaceutical division of Eli Lilly and Company.

Evan Bayh has voted on a variety of health issues in support of the Medicare drug benefits, backed allowing drugs to be imported from Canada, and supported the rights of patients to sue HMOs for punitive damages. In 2003 the American Public Health Association gave him a 75 percent rating.

While the finance industry was a major contributor of campaign funds for Bayh, in terms of individual companies, Eli Lilly, where his wife had worked, was the second-largest contributor with $54,022 last year. All told, taking into account Bayh's senatorial campaigns and, before that, his campaigns for governor, Lilly (the largest pharmaceutical company in Indiana) has been his second largest contributor since 1999.


Head Shake!!! Huh? He voted for imports from Canada and the right to sue HMO's and Eli Lilly is the second biggest contributor to his campaigns? That does not pass the sniff test. Think they're banking on his Presidency?

Senator Bayh has the exact opposite problem that Senator Obama has.
One has a blank slate, the other a very scribbled (then erased) slate.
One is from the populace, the other comes from a dynasty.
I'm not advocating Obama, I'm just pointing out how they are exact opposites, and
neither alternative is initially desirable.

Finally, there is one thing that I will be eternally grateful to Senator Bayh for. I cannot find the link to it, but the day after Rumsfelds' agonizing claim that there were not enought up-armored Humvees to send to Iraq, Senator Bayh was here up the street finding out WTF was going on, and proving Rummy a liar. If you don't order the vehicles, you don't get them.

“ignorant of what is going on” in his own country or disingenuous or

Bible-based program for female prisoners, but a national group said it's a risky
move while a similar system is being challenged in federal court.
Forty-nine
women have enrolled in the InnerChange Freedom Initiative at the Wrightsville
prison, which officials will dedicate Friday.
Under the program, inmates live
in a separate unit and attend classes on subjects including computer skills and
anger management. They also participate in religious devotionals.

My guess would be that they don't give a shit how it looks,
so they're just giving money to the faith-based initives in exchange for votes.

Republicans Postponing Budget Work Until 2007, Democrats Say

Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Republican congressional leaders have put off their remaining budget work until next year, dumping almost a half-trillion dollars of spending bills on the incoming Democratic majority, a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said.



Such a move would leave the new Democratic majority with the responsibility to pass the nine remaining spending bills, totaling almost $500 billion for government programs ranging from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to the national parks.

means you get here Tuesday night, you have a few easy votes, you vote on

A new ad, set to debut at 3:30 today will parody an ad accused of race-baiting Tennessee Democrat Harold Ford by gay-baiting Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman. An advanced copy of the ad has been acquired by RAW STORY, and is viewable below.

The ad, produced by Proud of Who We Are and BlogActive, is a parody mocking the the RNC's now-infamous "call me" ad. That spot, which the RNC eventually pulled this month, showed a scantily clad white actress saying she met Ford at "the Playboy party." It ended with her asking the congressman to call her. Many analysts believe it was produced to play on racist fears of interracial relationships.

The parody ad script:

Young man: "Ken Mehlman makes race-baiting ads. Yet he still wants my vote.
Isn't that enough?"

Woman on street: "Ken Mehlman did favors for convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff? (Laughs) So what? Me? I think government's a little TOO honest."

Out of all the music I've listened to so far in my life, I can honestly say that punk & new wave effected me the most. I was young enough to enjoy late nites & partying, but old enough to be (relatively) sensible about it. My ex-hubby was and is extremely unconventionable about his music and whether for good or bad, he was an influence. (how many people do you know who hung out with the Stooges & MC5 in Ann Arbor? hmmm?)

Last album I bought was Rancid, I loved Green Day when they weren't cool so I'd guess that except for an occasional foray into Funk, I'm just a PUNK kinda girl.*oops, a LOSER punk kinda girl*

Late last week, USA Today stated that the Republican Party is facing what it calls an "identity crisis" when it comes to efforts to try to please both homosexuals and conservative Christians. The report used a ceremony at the State Department to provide a very pointed example of how the GOP seems to want the support of "values voters," but are willing to appease the homosexual activist agenda.

The ceremony involved Secretary of State Rice and the swearing in of Mark Dybul, an open homosexual, as the nation's new global AIDS coordinator -- a position that carries the rank of ambassador.

I just want to point this out.

SHE WAS CIVIL!!!! Not effusive, not lovey dovey, just freakin' CIVIL!!!!! What was she supposed to do? Refuse to shake his hand? Ignore his mother-in-law?

Dybul, who was confirmed by the Senate two months ago but was just sworn in due to scheduling conflicts with Secretary Rice and Mrs. Bush, is the nation's third openly homosexual ambassador. The other two no longer hold their positions. According to news reports, in all three cases the men's homosexual partners held the Bible on which the oath of office was sworn.

F&W, the Cincinnati-based publisher of popular reference books, is launching a new imprint this fall that marks a departure from the kinds of practical, "how to" books for which the press is best known for. F&W will release two to three humor titles each year under the Tow Books imprint, beginning with Encyclopedia Brown and the Mysterious Presidency of George W. Bush by humor writer John Warner, also the new imprint's editor. The title is being released this week with a first print run of 12,000 copies. The second Tow Books title, scheduled for release in early 2007, will be Kevin Federline's Guide to Sudoku.

Subtle Power Shift In MSNBC Pundits?

I'm sensing a shift in the pundits over at MSNBC.

Now, let me preface this by saying I know all of these people have accomplishments other than being blabbers on cable,

but for this I'm just concentrating on their abilities at giving clear, concise arguments tempered with occasional healthy sarcasm.

My favorite MSNBC talking head is Rachel Maddow.

Hands down the smartest progressive pundit on any political show.

In the past week, I've seen her at least 7 times.

(for obvious reasons {{Keith}} MSNBC is the default news channel at my home.)

Maddow Fights Back

Rachel Maddow(born 1973) is the host of The Rachel Maddow Show on Air America Radio,

A graduate of Castro Valley High School in Castro Valley, California, Maddow later obtained a degree in public policy from Stanford University in 1994. She then received a Rhodes Scholarship in 1995 and used it to obtain a doctorate in politics from Lincoln College, Oxford University. "Out" on her application and to her Rhodes selection committee, Maddow is believed to be the first openly gay person to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship.

Her political activism has focused on AIDS and prisoners' rights, especially the prevention of the spread of HIV and AIDS in prisons. She is also an outspoken advocate for gay and lesbian issues, including same-sex marriage.

In the past week I've also seen Hilary Rosen, Kweisi Mfume and (omg!! my hippie heart!) Jerry Brown.

I came home Thursday after all the Chavez "Diablo" controversy, and guess who was debating the speech with Terry Jeffrey on MSNBC.

Hmm??

Greg Palast is a New York Times-bestselling author and a journalist for the British Broadcasting Corporation as well as the British newspaper The Observer.
His work frequently focuses on corporate malfeasance but has also been known to work with labor unions and consumer advocacy groups.
Notably, he has uncovered evidence that Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, and Florida Elections Unit Chief Clay Roberts, along with the ChoicePoint corporation, rigged the ballots during the US Presidential Election of 2000 and again in 2004 when, he argued, the problems and machinations from 2000 continued and that challenger John Kerry actually would have won if not for disproportional "spoilage" of Democratic votes. [1]

Palast has lectured at Cambridge University and the University of São Paulo. He lives in London and New York City. Palast is originally from Los Angeles, the "scum-end of LA, between the power plant and the garbage dump", and was educated at the University of Chicago, where he studied with the "Chicago Boys".(my bold)

Oh.My.God.

After I retrieved my jaw from the floor, I watched the sweetest bit of punditry I've ever seen.
Palast just laughed at Jeffreys' outrage, telling him that "90 percent of the world feels the same way about Bush".
Well, Jeffreys' turned 12 shades of red, sputtered and told Palast to just "Go to Venezuela".
ROFL, Mr Palast answered that he had been there many times and reported from there.
Jeffreys' had nothing to say.
Unfortunatley, it was about 2p and Noran was the moderator, so there was no transcript.

As soon as I finished whooping, I fired off an email to Dan Abrams and thanked him wholeheartedly for putting a journalist of Mr Palasts' caliber on.

Anyone else see this subtle shift? Cynically, they may just see that having strong progressive/liberal voices is working for them right now, but I'll take it.
